The eCourts platform lets you look up the status of cases in district courts and High Courts across India at no cost. This guide covers the main ways of searching and what to do with the result.
Which site should you use?
- District and subordinate courts: eCourts Services, or the eCourts Services mobile app.
- High Courts: High Court Services, or your High Court's own website.
- Supreme Court: the Supreme Court of India's own website, as it is not part of these services.
Search by CNR number: the quickest route
The CNR (Case Number Record) is a unique 16-character number given to a case. It does not change as a case moves through stages, which makes it the most dependable way to find a matter. It usually begins with letters identifying the state and court, as in the format RJHC01 followed by a serial number and year.
- Open eCourts Services and choose the CNR Number search.
- Enter the 16 characters without hyphens or spaces.
- Enter the captcha and search.
If you do not have the CNR
Choose your state, district and court complex, then use one of the other Case Status options:
- Case number: needs the case type, number and year.
- Filing number: useful before a case has been registered.
- Party name: useful when you only know a litigant's name and the year.
- Advocate name or Bar registration number: shows the matters linked to an advocate.
- FIR number, Act or case type: useful for criminal matters and for searches under a statute.
What the result tells you
A case page generally shows the case type, filing and registration details, the CNR, the parties and advocates, the next hearing date, the stage of the case, the court and judge, the history of hearings, and interim orders and judgments where uploaded.
Practical tips
- Note the CNR number of every new matter in your diary as soon as it is allotted.
- Do not treat the website as final. Data can be delayed or incorrect, so check the certified order or the court's own cause list before relying on a date.
- If details look wrong, raise it with the court's registry.
Checking many cases every day?
Searching one case at a time takes time when you have a full board. The Advocate Diary can auto-update your cases with court data, and keep the next date in your hearing calendar.
